About the Valley

Itata is where Chilean wine began. Spanish missionaries planted vines here in the 16th century, and the valley's ancient Cinsault and Muscat vines are among the oldest in the Americas. For centuries, Itata was overlooked by the wine world — but in the past decade, it has become one of the most exciting wine regions on the planet.

The valley's granitic soils, cool climate, and ancient ungrafted vines produce wines of extraordinary delicacy and complexity. Cinsault from Itata — pale, perfumed, and hauntingly beautiful — has drawn comparisons to the finest Burgundy.
